Working w/ Gesso

Monday, January 14th, 2008

I’ve recently been selling some postcard sized hanging collage pieces at a wonderful shop in Mt. Sterling KY called Finders Keepers Market.

For these I’ve used a postcard as a base and covered front and back with papers and then collage over top using different mediums.

Here’s an example of a couple of pieces I did using white gesso. Gesso is usually used as a base coat, if you need to completely paint over something that might show through your layers of paint then a coat of gesso first works as a good base coat so you don’t need quite so many coats of paint later. But it also works as a great background technique. Here I used it over old music sheets and old book pages, I tore the papers and adhered them, then took a very small amount of gesso on a foam brush and rubbed over certain areas, it’s almost a dry brush technique. It’s really easy and makes a wonderful background!

I’m so please and excited to be published in the latest issue of Altered Arts magazine!

Here’s their website: http://www.alteredarts.com/

My piece entitled “Graduation Day” is featured on page 38 of the Jan/Feb 2008 issue.

I’ve also previously been published in Vampstampnews (with an Egyptian themed coin envelope project) and Sommerset Studio Gallery (with a collaged soldered necklace piece). Also my local newpaper, the Lexington Herald Leader, used a scrapbook page of mine for an article on cooking and scrapbooking.

It’s so much fun to see your artwork in print, I hope to achive it more often!

Hello and thanks for visiting my blog! My name is Heather Holbrook and I live in Lexington KY with my husband, our cat and our three dogs. I love working with paper! About 11 years ago I learned how to stamp and got totally hooked. And I used to look at issues of Sommerset Studio Magazine and think “Gosh, I wish I could do that!”:)  So I staring learning about collage. I still love stamping and making cards, I do some scrapbooking too. I love anything and everything to do with paper!

I hope to use this as a place to share my collage ideas and art work. I have another website for stamping and scrapbooking: www.heatherholbrook.myctmh.com if you’re interesting in seeing more of my work with those mediums.

Please check back often to see my artwork and feel free to join my blog and make comments, I’d love to hear what you think.

Thanks for stopping by!
