Reading is FUNdamental

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

In many of the vintage books I find there is usually a sweet picture on the title page of a child or animal reading a book, these make some of my favorite pendants! I love to read and despite the fact that I cut up books for my art I do dearly love books. I always try to find books that are falling apart, unwanted and unloved so I can give them a new life.

Here’s a few new “reading” pendants, both are currently available in my Etsy shop. And be on the look out for lots more new pendants in the coming weeks, I’ve gotten several great books recently with some wonderful illustrations.

Charmed, I’m Sure

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

I wanted to share another mixed media charm necklace. It is on a ball chain and has a soldered stamped domino and a soldered round wooden game piece that I added vintage text too as well as a silver charm.  I love how these clink around and move as you wear them!

Tim says “Make it Work!”

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Here’s my latest collage piece inspired by Tim Gunn’s famous Project Runway quote: “Make it Work!”. The painted wooden tag in the middle has a paper dress with a tiny vintage button that’s hanging on a little wire hanger with a paper tag. I used a lot of vintage sewing items to embellish it like part of a tape measure, spool and wooden clothes pin. The background paper is vintage music sheet.

Do Fairies Eat Jello?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Awhile ago at an antique shop I picked up a stack of vintage Jello mould tins and have been staring at them trying to figure out what to make. Here’s my first idea, I turned them on their sides and put captured fairies in them with a ribbon loop at the top to hang them from. I added some vintage paper at the back and some faux grass at their feet. I think they turned out pretty sweet.

More Emily…

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Here’s another collage inspired by Emily Dickinson. This one is on a chunky canvas and I tried something new for the background, I stitched organza fabric onto of the vintage music paper. I think it adds a nice soft romantic touch. The focal point is a stained wooden tag with vintage book paper, a silhouette on canvas, the quote and a bird charm. I also added a muslin flower with a vintage button and wrapped some lace around the canvas too.

Soar High

Here’s another recent collage. Guess I’m on a quote kick, this one is inspired by a William Blake quote. It’s on 5″ x 7″ canvas board painted grey with vintage music sheet background. The cage is on a transparency and it’s embellished with a silver bird charm, metal key, metal clip, vintage measuring tape and letter beads.

Bird Cage William Blake Quote Collage

Dear Emily,

Friday, January 6th, 2012

I adore Emily Dickinson’s poetry. This collage was inspired by one of her most famous quotes. It’s on a 5″ x 7″ canvas board. The main images are of a bird cage and womans silhouette with a bird sitting on top of the cage. I embellished it with vintage measuring tape, a flower I made from muslin and a vintage button and a fountain pen nib.

Who are you calling a Witch?!

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

I’ve been very busy making lots of collage art soldered pendants for Halloween. I’ve done lots of witches, women and little girls, a bat fairy and some little wizards too. I think some of these would be great for Harry Potter fans also 🙂 Each hand cut collage is mounted on vintage Italian book paper and sandwiched between glass and soldered around the edges. I added black patina to the solder. These pendants are currently available here in my Etsy shop.

I adore the little grumpy witch asking “who are you calling a witch?”, I almost kept her for myself 🙂

Man Up!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Over at the Simon Says Stamp and Show the theme this week is Men Only. Here’s a very manly card I made using a cool stamp from River City Rubber Works. The text stamp is from Stampers Anonymous. The background is vintage math book paper and I also added a piece of vintage tape measure.
